Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how to curl in order to join?
Very simply, no! High Park welcomes and encourages new curlers to join the club each year although spots are limited. In particular, our Friday and Saturday evening sections are geared specifically to welcoming new members into the club and providing them the opportunity to learn to play. A number of our senior members also curl on Friday night, giving new members an opportunity to meet the members who curl other nights and may be looking for new team mates or a person to cover (spare) for them once or twice.
Do I need special footwear to curl?
As a new curler, a clean pair of runners is all you need to bring with you. The club has slip on sliders avaliable from the pro-shop for as low as $16.00.
Does the club have brooms avaliable for me to use?
High Park has a collection of brooms avaliable to new curlers. We ask that, if you decide to stick with the sport over a number of seasons, you invest in the purchase of your own broom. This will leave the clubs brooms in better repair long term for new curlers still to come.
Where can I purchase curling equipment?
You can purchase your equipment at the club's pro shop if we dont have what you are looking for we can order it in for you. Typical turn around for ordering is less than a week.
When is the best time to join the club?
Contact our office for an application form. In July our returning members will get first priority back into the leagues but when we know what spots are available we will contact new applicants for the remaining spots that come available in August and September.
What do my fees cover?
Curling fees cover your curling season including (if applicable) play-offs and access to the club all year long. We have a wonderfull new deck to enjoy a drink after work during the summer. As a member of the club you are also welcome to participate in the Bonspiels offered by the other clubs within the Ontario Curling Club Association.
Is it difficult to learn to curl?
No - you can learn the basics of curling safely in less than an hour. You also have the opportunity to attend clinics to improve your skills.
How do I get on a team or join a league?
Our office will explain how the various sections operate. Some leagues are team entry, while others are individual. Even if you don't have a team some sections are able to accomodate new players.
How long does it take to play a game?
Most games are about 2 hours. In addition, you should try to arrive about 10 minutes before your game, and be prepared to stay and socialize after the game. For many people, socializing after the game is the best part. Its standard practice in Ontario Curling clubs the winning team buys the losing team a drink after the game.
